Carlos Rivera is a dancer, choreographer, teacher, rehearsal director and actor based in Toronto originally from México. He is from Mixteco Indigenous Descent. Carlos graduated from the Mexico City Dance School where he study Mexican Traditional Dance and latter attended the Center for Choreographic Research where he graduated on Contemporary Dance and Choreography Studies. He has been an active artist in the Canadian stage scene for the last 16 years.!
Currently, he is an Artistic Associate with Red Sky Performance where he has opportunity to perform and choreograph in many of the company’s productions like: Caribou Song, Dancing Americas, Raven Stole the Sun, Shimmer, Tono, Migration, InSIGnia, The Great Mountain, and lately Mistatim, where he is plays the main character. With Red Sky, Carlos toured to China, Mongolia, Australia, USA, México, Iceland, Switzerland and across Canada. He also toured to Argentina and Costa Rica and Mexico with his own dance project Yumare Arte Escenico before he came to Canada.!
Some of the venues where Carlos has been perform are: National Arts Centre, Harbourfront Centre, Vancouver Playhouse, Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Théâtre Maisonnnuve, Yukon Arts Centre, Banff Centre for the Arts, Opera and Dance Theatre of Mongolia, National Arts Centre of China, Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico.!
With Red Sky performance he also had the opportunity to participated in arts residencies in New Zealand, Winnipeg, Banff and Mexico.!
He attended the Indigenous Dance Program at Banff Centre severals times as a dancer, teacher and choreographer. His work “I’m Not The Indian You Have in Mind” was presented as part of the NextSteps Dance series at Harbourfront Centre. He has also collaborate with companies across Canada like: The Chimera Project, Article 11, MT Space Theatre, Raven Spirit Dance, The Vancouver Opera, amount others.!
