The Indigenous Performing Arts Alliance (IPAA) is a member-driven organization of professional Indigenous performing artists and arts organizations. IPAA serves as a collective voice for its members and for Indigenous performing arts in Canada. IPAA provides leadership, support, representation, advocacy, and practical assistance for the national development of Indigenous performing arts.


Directed by and reporting to the IPAA Grand Council (Board of Directors), the Executive Director (E.D.) is accountable to the Community of Artists [membership] while encouraging, supporting, promoting and securing Indigenous Arts across what is now called Canada. The E.D. will work to fulfill the intent of IPAA to connect, develop and celebrate First Nations, Inuit and Métis artists and communities - remote, isolated, urban, northern, settlement, and reserve-based - on a national bases level.


Education and Experience

  • Master’s Degree or 3-5 years’ experience/knowledge of, and/or demonstrated commitment to Indigenous Performing Arts. Previous experience as an Indigenous leader is an asset. Transferrable skills maybe considered such as any combination of administrative management functions; i.e., recruitment, placement, position classification, pay or wage administration, employee management relations services, employee development, and financial planning.

  • Demonstrated and in-depth working knowledge of community based programs and services, funding sources, community relations and Board relations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills & client service skills

  • Proven problem solver with solid analytical skills
  • Exceptional time-management skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with staff, peers, and industry colleagues/contacts in a team environment.
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly Excel and pivot tables, and the ability to learn new computer programs efficiently
  • Proven ability to monitor and uphold high quality of service and products to both internal and external clients
  • Able to think globally and work with various cultures/backgrounds
  • Demonstrated flexibility in adapting to a wide variety of tasks and functions
  • Strong multi-tasking and prioritization skills with the ability to adapt to change



To ensure the Alliance honors of all generations by providing relational opportunities for emerging, mid-career, and established artists by facilitating:


  • Training Opportunities to enable the development of new skills. investing in Indigenous artists, emerging art forms and cultural knowledge;
  • Greater outreach through youth initiatives, and programs devoted to building relationships between audiences and artists;
  • Increasing IPAA’s Membership
  • Mentorships: Drawing upon Elders’ Knowledge and Life Experiences either by their professional arts practice, cultural knowledge, knowledge of Indigenous language, community standing, and/or ability to guide, train and effectively collaborate.
  • Encouraging the best possible performance efficiencies of all IPAA Management, Staff & Volunteers.



To uphold and advance First Nation, Inuit and Métis artists and works by:


  • Identifying and serving the needs of Indigenous artists (e.g. through survey polls and public forums);
  • Providing administrative support for Indigenous artist-members
  • Developing outreach strategies for membership growth – including processes for membership fees and renewals –inclusive of diverse peoples, regional representation, inter-disciplinary artists and artistic expression;
  • Organizing networking opportunities for and amongst IPAA’s National Community of Artists; and managing up-to-date website for e.g. postings, articles, consultant listings, nation-wide professional opportunities, artistic collaborations, call-outs, need-to-know information (auditions, grant deadlines, critiques, lodgings, Performances, etc.)



Create a responsive and enriching programming that serves to support and promote artists and communities while leading a dynamic team of employees, contracted professionals, and volunteers by way of:


  • Strategizing private and public funding e.g. grant research & proposal writing;
  • creating, tracking, and reporting to the Grand Council on the annual budget and multi-year forecasts;
  • Hiring staff, monitoring and updating job descriptions, identifying employment needs to Council
  • providing employees and contracted individuals with understanding of structure, planning and programs to efficiently meet deadlines within budget;
  • Developing a Community of Artists website exchanges re shared experiences or issues that may arise while in pursuit of professional performing arts activities;
  • Organizing and execute a bi-annual Arts Gathering & Presentation (Inter-Tribal) in collaboration with different territorial arts & cultural leaders from across the nation to highlight artist works and exchanges.
  • Accessing information, remaining current and connected to arts community at large to provide relevant resources to the Community of Artists, including establishing partnerships and supporting equitable collaborations.



To respect, endorse, and adhere to cultural values, ways of knowing and being that will impact artists’ livelihood and artistic practices, and strengthen our Indigenous national community by:


  • Honor and respect diverse traditional Teachings, protocols and practices to ensure the decolonization and the indigenization of IPAA and its functions
  • Advocate as the nation’s leading Voice for equitable collaborations with non-indigenous artists and organizations.
  • Be able to refer authentic and ethical Indigenous professional artists/consultants for organizations seeking collaborations or Indigenous inclusion projects.
  • Maintaining orderly Alliance financial records and Annual reporting documents electronically and in hardcopy where appropriate.
  • Managing punctual and accurate payables as well as all receivables.
  • Being an effective Communicator regarding Grand Council lines of communication, electronic communication, professional exchanges, report writing, inter-office communication, and ability to articulate with Respect; providing timely Summary/Activity Reports, budget updates, Program planning; attend regularly scheduled Grand Council Gatherings [board meetings]; collaborate with Grand Council Ground Workers Circles for Strategic Planning, Programming, HR, and Treasury.
