Infinite vision ∞ Infinite possibilities
THE QUÉBEC ENGLISH-LANGUAGE PLAYWRIGHTS' UNIT
Infinithéâtre’s The Unit comprises of a group of wildly talented playwrights most of whom are sponsored by a different English-language Québec theatre. Playwrights from across Québec are invited to submit an early draft of a play they are currently writing and an independent selection committee handpicks the final members of The Unit from an overwhelming amount of submissions.
The Unit reflects The English-Language Communities And Diversity Of Québec On Stages Across The Province. Members take part in bi-monthly group dramaturgical sessions and in addition their projects also benefit from the one-on-one attention of a play dramaturge. The Unit culminates in a week-long festival of staged readings which aims to garner interest from artistic directors across Québec and Canada for future programming of the plays. The Unit is run by Infinithéâtre, with support from the entire English-language theatre community, and provides a window of input from the theatres that have a play in development.
Infinithéâtre calls for submissions to its second cohort of The Playwrights’ Unit.
Interested Writers are to submit a completed early draft of a new and unproduced play by June 16, 2017. Writers must be able to commit to a 12-month process of group workshops to be led by Alexandria Haber (Playwright & Dramaturg) and Guy Sprung (Artistic Director, Infinithéâtre). All meetings and workshops will take place in Montréal.
Writers will be notified of their selection on August 1, 2017, with the initial meeting to take place in September 2017. Workshops will then be scheduled, to meet the convenience of all parties, approximately every two months, leading to a series of staged public readings in September 2018. Writers are expected to bring a new draft of their play to each session. The inaugural cohort of The Unit culminated with staged readings at The Centaur Theatre, The Segal Centre, Mainline Theatre, and Grove Hall Performing Arts Centre (Huntington, Qc) in September 2016 and we plan on doing the same for cohort 2.
The goal of The Unit is to take an early draft of a play or project and develop it into a production-ready script. Must be a Québec writer, or a First Nations writer from anywhere across Canada. Preference will be given to writers and projects that are supported or sponsored by a production company or theatre anywhere in the world. Please display this in the form of a letter of support from said company.
A hard copy of your play must be delivered or post-marked to Infinithéâtre (5413 Blvd. St-Laurent, Suite 302, Montreal, Qc, H2T, 1S5) by June 16, 2017. Please include your play, a CV and your letter of support if applicable.
Typically, workshops are two or three days of 10am-6pm work. Writers are paid a stipend of $100 per day for the workshops.
